What is Schoolfriend?
Schoolfriend is the world’s first web-based learning system that automatically tailors exercises to a child's individual ability. Working at the child’s pace, Schoolfriend offers the equivalent of private tuition in maths, spelling and vocabulary at a fraction of the cost.
How much does it cost?
Surprisingly little. Children can access all available subjects from just £1.98 per week, less than £8 per month. Subscriptions are available in renewable periods of 3, 6 or 12 months.
Can we sign up for one subject only or do we have to do all of them?
From as little as £1.98 a week you get unlimited access to all subjects but can choose whether you want your child’s exercises to cover all subjects or just a limited area.
Are any discounts for more than one child in a family?
We do not offer discounts, as one of Schoolfriend's many strengths is that we treat each child as an individual, tracing his or her path through the National Curriculum.
How quickly can a child get online once the subscription is paid?
Immediately! Once you’ve registered your child, the initial assessment test can be done straight away. It is instantly marked, and automatically evaluated; tailoring the first exercise to your child's exact level of ability.
What is a school@home account?
Children who use Schoolfriend at school can carry on doing their Schoolfriend exercises at home. Parents can also access their account to monitor their progress by setting up a school@home account that is totally free of charge!
Can Schoolfriend help with important school tests & exams?
Absolutely! Schoolfriend will work with your child whenever you want, drawing questions of the right level from our extensive database of hundreds of thousands of questions. You can even ask the programme to focus on a specific area in preparation for an important test.
Why does Schoolfriend use 15-20 minute exercises?
Schoolfriend is unashamedly academic. Research results indicate that short, concentrated, 15 minute periods of work optimise learning, so we have designed our programme to match young children's attention spans.
How does the computer work out at what level my child should start?
Your child takes an initial assessment test that the computer analyses for the accuracy and speed in which it was completed. Using this information, the computer generates exercises specifically tailored to your child's ability in individual areas. In other words, customised tuition.
What happens if my child is stuck on a topic?
Not to worry - your child can click on the HINT button for a little help with a particular question. If a more detailed explanation is required, in depth tutorials offer step-by-step guides on how to solve a problem.
How does Schoolfriend differ from Maths CDs?
Schoolfriend has been specifically designed to tailor exercises to each child's particular ability, rather than setting the same tests and exercises for all, so every Schoolfriend exercise is uniquely created for the child . Schoolfriend helps children overcome their particular weaknesses whilst steaming ahead in areas that they have already mastered.
What is the difference between Schoolfriend and free education websites?
Schoolfriend is the only website that is aimed at giving customised, tailor-made exercises to Key Stage 1, 2 and 3 children, helping to create solid foundations on which they can build. The exercises, whilst fun, are unashamedly academic. Schoolfriend is not just an assessment programme, it actually teaches children how to do the maths topics or spellings that they are finding difficult.
Do they have to work on their exercises every night?
Not at all! Each exercise is designed to last approximately 15 minutes and we recommend that children do about 3 to 4 exercises a week. At times additional use may be recommended. For instance, in school holidays when children may be bored, or before an important test, when children may want to practise the topic being tested.
Can't my child use Schoolfriend whilst they're at school?
Yes, we work with hundreds of schools throughout the country. Please ask your school to contact us:
Tel: 0870 442 2287
Email: info@schoolfriend.com
Can I see how my child is doing?
Of course! Every child has an account with us and every parent has password protected access to the account. Our detailed reports enable you to see exactly what progress your child is making on all topics at any time. When children are using a school account of Schoolfriend, their teachers will also be able to access their progress reports. Our secure servers ensure that only parents and teachers can access the progress reports and that all your child’s data is safe.
How does my child move on through the levels?
By taking into account the accuracy, speed and help needed for each exercise, the system is able to automatically calculate when a child is ready to progress to the next level on each individual topic. As exercises are tailor-made from our database of hundreds and thousands of questions, a child struggling with fractions, for example, can continue to receive basic fractions while progressing onto more complex addition or subtraction questions.
How will I get my child to use Schoolfriend?
By making the exercises confidence boosting and fun, we find that children are happy, and even excited, to logon to Schoolfriend to do their exercises.
Does Schoolfriend only cover maths and spelling?
Schoolfriend currently covers maths, spelling and vocabulary, but if your child needs help with reading, simply visit Phonicfriend.
